Son of former ayatollah chosen as Iran’s next supreme leader
Iran’s Assembly of Experts has selected Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s next supreme leader, following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei in a U.S.-Israeli strike in late February.

The 56-year-old has ties to senior clerics and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which dominates Iran’s security forces and its economy. This gives him leverage across the state’s political and coercive security institutions but critics are skeptical if he holds adequate credentials needed to lead the country.
