बंगाल की कानून व्यवस्था पर सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने भी चिंता जाहिर की. मालदा में हजारों लोगों की भीड़ ने 7 ज्यूडिशियल अफसरों को दिनभर बंधक बनाए रखा. कलकत्ता हाईकोर्ट के चीफ जस्टिस ने होम सेक्रेट्री और DGP से बात की. लेकिन पांच घंटे तक DM और SP मौके पर नहीं पहुंचे. रात में ही हालात की जानकारी चीफ जस्टिस ऑफ इंडिया को दी गई. तब जाकर रात बारह बजे के बाद मालदा में बंधक बनाए गए ज्यूडीशियल अफसरों को छुड़ाया जा सका.

The Supreme Court, too, expressed concern regarding the law and order situation in Bengal. In Malda, a mob of thousands held seven judicial officers hostage for the entire day. The Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court spoke with the Home Secretary and the DGP; however, the District Magistrate (DM) and the Superintendent of Police (SP) failed to reach the scene for five hours. The Chief Justice of India was apprised of the situation that very night. It was only then—after midnight—that the judicial officers held hostage in Malda could finally be rescued.
