Sabotage, showdowns and zombies: a tumultuous week for Poland and Ukraine
Today’s stories in the Weekly Roundup with Jon Carter:

Poland narrowly escaped disaster this week after an explosion struck the crucial Warsaw–Lublin railway line, an attack Prime Minister Donald Tusk has branded the most serious security breach since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. With suspects allegedly tied to Russian intelligence now hiding in Belarus, Warsaw has launched Operation Horizon, deploying 10,000 troops to safeguard strategic sites as hybrid threats multiply across the region.

In sports news, Polish football fans finally have clarity on the road to the 2026 World Cup. The national team will face Albania in a playoff semifinal, with a potential final against Sweden or Ukraine standing between Poland and a ticket to North America. The high-stakes matches are set for March.

And despite unrelenting bombardments, Ukraine’s cultural scene remains defiantly alive. The zombie thriller The Dam made its international debut, as studio FILM.UA [@FILMUAGroup] continues shooting through blackouts, air-raid sirens, and curfews, proving that Ukrainian cinema refuses to stand still even under fire.
