Putin’s Secret Man Shocks Zelensky, Ex-Ukrainian Officer Now Leads Russia’s Deadly Kupiansk Assault
A former Ukrainian officer, Serhii Storozhenko—born in Kharkiv Oblast in 1975—now commands Russia’s latest offensive toward Kupiansk, a key town in northeastern Ukraine. Storozhenko’s trajectory involved decades in Ukraine’s army, a Kosovo KFOR mission, command of 1,200 troops during Russia’s 2014 Crimea seizure (with about half defecting alongside him), and subsequent enlistment in Russia’s forces. After leading Russia’s 126th Coastal Brigade, he rose to become the Major General and Chief of Staff of the 35th Army before being promoted in 2023 by Vladimir Putin to Lieutenant General and Commander of the 6th Combined Arms Army, currently spearheading the assault in Kharkiv Oblast.
