Brazilian government released on Monday footage from the recent “containment operation,” which left 119 people dead, according to official figures from the state of Rio de Janeiro, triggering a wave of reactions both inside the country and abroad.
The images, captured by body cameras and drones during the operation a week ago, show heavily armed officers moving through the narrow alleys of the Penha and Alemao complexes, along with several burned vehicles across the favelas. Drone footage from above shows dozens of burning vehicles, with a thick black cloud rising and visible from kilometres away.
