Peru President | Peru’s Congress Elects New President Amid Protests Day After José Jerí’s Ouster
Peru’s Congress has removed interim president José Jerí after lawmakers voted 75–24 to censure him, citing “moral incapacity.” Jerí, who took office following the removal of Dina Boluarte in October, is facing preliminary investigations over alleged influence-peddling and undisclosed meetings with Chinese businessmen. He has denied any wrongdoing.
Amid growing public frustration over political instability and rising crime, Congress moved swiftly to appoint a successor. Lawmakers selected José Maria Balcázar as interim president, who will lead the country until the transfer of power following July’s post-election process.
