It’s not Donald Trump’s name on the Nobel Peace Prize this year — despite his repeated public claims that he deserves one. Instead, the prestigious award for 2025 has gone to Maria Corina Machado, a leading voice for democracy in Venezuela.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday that Machado was selected for her “tireless efforts to promote democratic rights” and her “peaceful struggle for a transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
“When authoritarian regimes seize power, it is vital to recognise those who bravely defend freedom,” the committee said, calling Machado a “beacon of hope” in one of Latin America’s most repressive states.
Machado is a former member of Venezuela’s National Assembly and the founder of Vente Venezuela, a liberal party she co-created in 2013. She’s also a long-standing civil society activist, known for establishing platforms like Súmate and SoyVenezuela, which aim to restore free elections and constitutional order in the country.
