Nobel Peace Prize 2025: Who is Maria Corina Machado?

María Corina Machado, a key figure in Venezuela’s democracy movement, has been recognised for her tireless efforts to secure free elections and representative government. Born in Caracas in 1967, Machado trained as an industrial engineer before founding Súmate in 2002, a volunteer group promoting political rights and monitoring elections.

Despite Venezuela’s deteriorating democratic institutions under President Nicolás Maduro, Machado stood firm. Blocked from running in the 2024 presidential election, she backed Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia’s candidacy and mobilised volunteers to ensure election tallies were properly documented, preventing the regime from manipulating results. The Nobel Committee praised her leadership in safeguarding democracy under extreme pressure.
