NDTV Bangladesh on Edge After Mob Killing, Jamaat Rhetoric Fuels Tensions

Tensions are escalating in Bangladesh after another Hindu man, Amrit Mondal, was beaten to death by a mob, days after the lynching of Hindu garment worker Deepu Chandradas. The killing has intensified fears among minorities and sharpened scrutiny of the country’s law-and-order situation.

The interim government in Dhaka, led by Muhammad Yunus, has denied any communal motive, stating that Amrit Mondal was killed following an alleged extortion attempt and had multiple criminal cases pending against him. Authorities have warned against what they call attempts to “communalise” the incident and promised legal action.

However, the killing comes amid heightened political unrest. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has accused the interim government of failing to protect religious minorities, while controversial remarks by a Jamaat-e-Islami–aligned lawyer targeting India and BNP leader Tariq Rahman have further inflamed tensions.

With mob violence, extremist rhetoric, and political uncertainty converging, Bangladesh appears to be at a critical crossroads, even as New Delhi watches developments closely for their regional implications.
