NDTV Assam News | What Does Special Revision Of Voters List Means For Assam

The Election Commission (EC) on Monday announced a Special Revision of electoral rolls in Assam.

Assam is likely to go to the assembly polls early next year. As per the EC’s order to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, January 1, 2026, has been set as the qualifying date for the state to conduct the exercise.

According to officials, this Special Revision is more comprehensive than the Annual Special Summary Revision but less extensive than the SIR (Specific Intensive Revision).

The order stated that registered family members must be kept in the same section and at the same place to ensure no family is split, and mandates the 100 percent removal of multiple entries, dead electors, and permanently shifted voters. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct house-to-house surveys to get details verified or corrected from the electors or the head of the household.

The order said that the details of “Doubtful” voters (D-voters) will not be included in Statement-I as no verification is required in their case. All related particulars (such as name, age, photographs, etc.) of the D-voters shall be carried forward to the draft electoral roll without any change. Any modification, including removal or deletion, shall be made only upon receipt of an order from the competent Foreigners Tribunal or appropriate court of law.
