NATO Rebel Chooses Putin, Snubs Trump’s Grand Threat From UN Stage On Buying Russia Oil| Ukraine,EU
At the UN General Assembly, tensions flared over Europe’s continued reliance on Russian energy. Former U.S. President Donald Trump said he was “embarrassed” to discover that NATO allies were still buying Russian oil, singling out Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Asked by reporters about Orban’s refusal to stop energy imports, Trump called him “a friend” and suggested he could persuade him to change course if they spoke directly. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, in an interview with The Guardian on September 23, dismissed the idea of cutting Russian supplies as a “nice dream,” citing infrastructure limitations that made alternatives unfeasible. He insisted Hungary could not ensure safe energy supplies without Russian oil and gas, and criticized EU officials as “fanatics incapable of rational dialogue.” The clash underscored divisions within Europe as Washington pushes allies to tighten sanctions against Moscow.
