North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile into the East Sea today (11.7), just one day after warning of a “corresponding response” to U.S. sanctions.
The South Korean government has urged Pyongyang to stop actions that threaten peace.
Reporter Cho Hye-jin has the details.
[Report]
North Korea has once again fired a ballistic missile into the East Sea.
The South Korean military detected the launch of a short-range ballistic missile from the area of Taegwan in North Pyongan Province at around 12:35 p.m.
The missile, which flew approximately 700 kilometers, is presumed to be part of the KN-23 series, often referred to as the “North Korean Iskander.”
However, because the projectile appeared to perform a pull-up maneuver after descending, analysts suggest it could be a Hwasong-11Ma, equipped with a hypersonic glide vehicle.
This marks the North’s second provocation in 16 days, following a previous missile launch on Oct. 22.
After the collapse of the North Korea–U.S. summit late last month, the U.S. government announced new sanctions targeting ships involved in smuggling North Korean coal and iron ore to China, as well as individuals and entities connected to laundering illicit cyber proceeds.
In apparent retaliation, North Korea launched the missile just one day after its Foreign Ministry vice minister warned of countermeasures against the sanctions.
[Im Eul-chul/Professor, Institute for Far Eastern Studies, Kyungnam University: “Watching the U.S. continue with additional sanctions, North Korea has reverted to its traditional tit-for-tat response strategy.”]
Given the missile’s range of 700 kilometers, experts also believe it may have been aimed at the USS George Washington, the U.S. aircraft carrier that entered Busan port on Nov. 5.
[Yang Moo-jin/Professor, University of North Korean Studies: “Historically, North Korea has responded to the deployment of U.S. strategic assets on the Korean Peninsula—often linked to joint military drills—with short-range ballistic missile launches.”]
The South Korean government convened an emergency security meeting, urging North Korea to immediately halt actions that threaten peace on the Korean Peninsula.
