More comfort for cancer patients
Cancer patients in Barbados are just over a month away from having access to the life-saving treatment they have been waiting for.
The long-awaited state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator, which will deliver high-precision radiation therapy, will be at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) on Tuesday. Medical physicist Corey Drakes made the disclosure on the QEH’s Pulse Radio Show on Monday
The site for the equipment failed inspection in July, leading to a delay in the installation of the Linear Accelerator. But Mr Drakes said it has now passed and the equipment will be moved from storage to the Hospital. With installation expected to be completed by the first week in November if all goes to plan, the project lead said the linear accelerator should be operational later that month.
Head of the Oncology Department, Dr. Lalitha Sripathi, says the development is a major step forward for cancer care in Barbados.
She explains that the Linear Accelerator will allow the qeh to provide fast and incredibly accurate treatment to patients. The consultant oncologist said treatment times will also be shorter.
