China and the US have agreed on a framework for a new trade deal, just days before Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are set to meet on Thursday. American and Chinese officials met in Malaysia on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, “Very successful framework for the leaders to discuss on Thursday. We discussed trade, rare earths, fentanyl, TikTok, and the overall relationship between the two countries.” His statement comes just days after Trump threatened to raise tariffs on China, an additional 100 percent, to punish Beijing for restricting rare earth supplies to the US. China has been using rare earths as leverage, tightening exports and even cracking down on secondary suppliers.
