A planned Jewish convention set to be held in Azerbaijan next week has been cancelled, according to the Times of Israel. The Conference of European Rabbis event, which would have been the first of its kind in a Muslim country, was called off due to “security threats.” The Azerbaijan government had earlier agreed to host the gathering, which was expected to attract hundreds of participants from the U.S., Europe, and Israel. The conference aimed to promote interfaith cooperation after the Gaza war and address issues like the Abraham Accords and antisemitism in Europe. However, mounting criticism from Arab leaders in recent days, including warnings that the event served the interests of the U.S. and Israel, led to its cancellation. A similar CER conference in Sarajevo was also cancelled in June following protests. Tensions between Arab nations and Israel remain high after the September 9 Israeli airstrike in Doha that targeted Hamas officials involved in Gaza peace negotiations.
