LDP leader Sanae Takaichi elected as Japan’s first female prime minister
Japan has elected its first female prime minister, Ms Sanae Takaichi. The 64-year-old clinched 237 votes in Japan’s Lower House, with backing from a new coalition partner. Ms Takaichi also prevailed in the Upper House, winning the majority in a run-off ballot. She has been formally sworn into office during a ceremony with Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace. Ms Takaichi and her team will have to lead a minority government through challenges at home and abroad. Michiyo Ishida reports.
