Latin America Showdown: Peru’s Congress Explodes In Anger, Turns On Mexico’s President Sheinbaum
Peru’s Congress declared Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum persona non grata after Mexico granted asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chavez, accused of helping ex-President Pedro Castillo attempt a coup in 2022. The decision deepens tensions between Lima and Mexico City.
The motion was promoted by congress members from different political parties, including Ernesto Bustamante of Popular Force, Maricarmen Alva of Popular Action, and Nelcy Heidinger of Alliance for Progress (APP), among others, who argued that since Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, she has adopted a “hostile, open and confrontational stance against Peru.”
