In May, there was an incident where a naval patrol aircraft crashed, resulting in the deaths of four people.
The joint civilian-government-military investigation has been ongoing for nearly six months, but the cause of the accident has not been determined.
However, it has been revealed that the pilots did not properly train for loss of control situations, raising concerns about the military’s complacent response.
This is Jo Hye-jin reporting.
[Report]
A naval P-3CK maritime patrol aircraft has taken off from the runway.
While performing a ‘circling flight,’ the right wing suddenly buckles, leading to a crash.
Four people, including the pilot and crew members, lost their lives in this incident.
The joint civilian-military accident investigation committee conducted an investigation over five months but could not find a clear cause.
Based on CCTV footage and the condition of the propeller, simulations showed that during the turning process, the aircraft entered a ‘stall’ state, losing lift, with speed dropping by about 60% and altitude by approximately 20% compared to normal flight.
It was confirmed that there were no structural defects in the aircraft, but the reason for the ‘stall’ could not be identified.
The aircraft involved did not have a flight data recorder, and the voice recorder was also damaged in the accident, making it impossible to verify the details.
Damage from foreign substances in the engine was found, which may have distracted the pilot’s attention.
[Cho Jeong-gwon/Chairman of the Joint Civilian-Government-Military Accident Investigation Committee: “Organizational, human, technical, and environmental factors interacted in a complex manner, and it was limited to specify the cause of the accident to any one factor.”]
However, there are concerns that the aircraft lacked a stall warning system and that the pilots did not receive recovery training for stalls or loss of control as outlined in the flight manual, leading to inadequate responses.
The aircraft type has only 1.2 pilots per unit, and the military explained that they could not train adequately due to frequent operational flights.
The military plans to enhance safety features, including a stall warning system for the aircraft type, and to regularly conduct stall recovery training for pilots.
