Japan election shock: A sharp turn in defense and the constitution?
Japan’s recent snap election has delivered a historic victory for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and her ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Together with its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, the ruling bloc has secured more than a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives. This decisive result gives the government far greater leverage on both security and economic policy, and it is already reigniting debate over constitutional revision, defense spending and Japan’s broader political direction. So what drove this landslide victory? What changes might now follow? And what does it mean for regional stability and for China-Japan relations?

Guests in this episode of Dialogue are Zhao Hai, director of International Political Studies at the National Institute for Global Strategy; Benoit Hardy-Chartrand, senior lecturer at Temple University in Japan; and also K.J. Noh, journalist, writer and educator.
