Israel Navy Raids Gaza Aid Flotilla Vessels, Detains Greta Thunberg, Others; Hamas & Turkey Lash Out
On October 1, the Israeli Navy intercepted and boarded several vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was attempting to break the 18-year blockade and deliver aid to Gaza. At least six ships in the 47-vessel fleet were stopped, activists—including Greta Thunberg—detained, and communications jammed. Israel’s Foreign Ministry said all activists would be deported after Yom Kippur and insisted the operation was for national security. The arrests provoked international condemnation: Turkey’s foreign ministry called the boarding “an act of terrorism,” while Hamas condemned it as piracy and “maritime terrorism.”
