Ireland’s No-Holds-Barred NATO Critic Claims Throne As EU Struggles With Putin | Catherine Connolly
Far-left independent candidate Catherine Connolly won Ireland’s presidential election in a historic landslide, securing 63% of first-preference votes. The 68-year-old former Galway mayor, supported by left-wing parties, is a long-time advocate of Irish military neutrality and a vocal critic of NATO expansion and EU militarization. Connolly has previously criticized Israel, calling its actions in Gaza a “genocide” and referring to Hamas as “part of the fabric of the Palestinian people,” though she later condemned Hamas’ attacks. During her campaign, she also criticized the EU’s focus on militarization at the expense of social welfare and described NATO as having played a “warmongering” role in the Ukraine conflict. Her victory comes at a time of rising tensions between NATO and Russia, with Ireland set to hold the EU presidency in 2026.
