Iran President Pezeshkian Downplays UN Sanctions Amid Tensions With West; ‘They Are Dreaming…’
Tensions have escalated following the reimposition of UN sanctions on Iran, the first in over a decade. Iranian President Pezeshkian dismissed the sanctions as a “pipe dream,” accusing the West of attempting to force Iran into submission and vowing that his government would protect citizens affected by the measures. The sanctions, reinstated on September 27, follow concerns raised by the E3 (France, Germany, and the UK) over Iran’s nuclear program. The EU and UK soon implemented their own sanctions on September 29 and 30. The renewed restrictions are expected to heavily impact Iran’s economy, particularly its energy sector, crude exports, and foreign investment. The sanctions also restore an arms embargo, ban uranium enrichment and reprocessing, restrict ballistic missile activities, and include a global asset freeze and travel bans on Iranian individuals. Following the reinstatement, the Iranian rial plunged to record lows against the U.S. dollar. Reports indicate Iran is considering withdrawing from the nuclear treaty altogether.
