India-US Trade Deal – A Deal To Celebrate Or Scrutinise?
India’s new trade pact with the United States is being hailed by the government as a landmark breakthrough, but the Opposition is urging caution. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal says it’s a deal worth celebrating and insists Indian farmers and MSMEs are fully protected. Economist Praveen Chakravarty, who is also the Chairman of All India Professionals’ Congress, however, questions the fine print, asking how India will meet a $500 billion import commitment and what reciprocal guarantees the US has offered. The debate also widens to concerns over transparency, jobs, inequality, state finances, and whether headline GDP growth is truly benefiting the common man.
