Unlike loose gulal, Gulal Gota are lightweight lac balls filled with dry colour that burst into soft clouds upon impact, creating a stunning festive effect. Made from natural lac resin, secreted by insects that live on trees like palash, ber and kusum, each piece is carefully shaped, filled with arrowroot-based gulal, sealed and packed.

The craft is believed to have begun under royal patronage, when local artisans were asked to create something unique for Holi celebrations. Today, these colourful creations are shipped across India, preserving a rare art form that blends heritage, skill and festive joy.

Even as synthetic colours dominate markets, Jaipur’s Gulal Gota remain a premium, handcrafted symbol of tradition passed down through generations.
