Tokyo is on the backfoot after reports that, following Trump’s lengthy call in which Xi Jinping forcefully restated China’s red lines on Taiwan, he phoned Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and urged to “lower the volume” and avoid provoking Beijing. Japanese officials, already on edge over China’s fury at Takaichi’s suggestion that a Taiwan attack could trigger a Japanese military response, now fear Washington may prioritise stabilising ties and trade with China over fully backing Japan’s harder line on Taiwan. The White House’s emphasis on having “very good” relations with Beijing, and Trump’s focus on soybean and trade gains in his public statement, have deepened concerns in Tokyo that US commitments could waver just as regional tensions and war‑game scenarios around Taiwan intensify.
