Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna, erupted on June 2, 2025, sending towering plumes of smoke, ash and volcanic gases high into the sky above Sicily, Italy, in a dramatic natural event. The eruption originated from the volcano’s Southeast Crater, where a partial collapse triggered explosive activity and pyroclastic flows, prompting a red alert for aviation crews and widespread footage of the ash cloud rising several kilometres into the air. Scientists from the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said this marked one of the most significant eruptive episodes in recent months, visible for miles around and captured on webcams.
