Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva hailed the 27-year prison sentence handed to former president Jair Bolsonaro as a historic milestone, calling it “a lesson in democracy” during a ceremony at the Palacio do Planalto in Brasilia. Lula praised Brazil’s justice system for carrying out what he described as the country’s first imprisonment of a former leader for attempting a coup after losing elections. He emphasized that Brazil resisted external pressure, particularly from the United States, and completed an “impeccable trial.” Lula also commented on U.S. relations, joking that he and Donald Trump should “hug each other” to see if they can get along.
