Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has delivered his starkest warning yet about China, declaring that Beijing is accelerating plans to “force reunification through military means” by 2027 and vowing that democratic Taiwan’s sovereignty “cannot be violated or annexed.” He announced a massive defence build-up, including a special US$40 billion “T‑Dome” air and missile shield over eight years. Lai framed the plan as a fight to preserve the “status quo”, arguing that compromise in the face of Chinese aggression would mean “enslavement,” even as the US urges Taipei to invest more in self-defence and Beijing insists Taiwan’s “return” is part of the post-war order.
