H-1B Visa: Confusion Worsens, Trump Admin Jumps Into Damage Control Over Sudden $100,000 Fees Rule
Confusion erupted after President Trump signed an order on September 19 imposing a $100,000 fee on H-1B visas, triggering panic among foreign workers and U.S. tech giants. Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and JPMorgan issued urgent advisories, with Amazon even urging H-1B and H-4 visa holders to return to the U.S. before midnight on September 21. Immigration attorneys warned the measure could disrupt lives and face legal challenges, while critics accused Trump of bypassing Congress. The White House later clarified that the new levy applies only to new applicants and will not affect current visa holders, renewals, or re-entries. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized it is a one-time petition fee, not an annual charge, and will first apply in the next H-1B lottery cycle. India, which received 71% of H-1B visas in 2024, warned of potential humanitarian consequences, while China accounted for 11.7%.
