Green men, but with weapons in their hands, on the Estonian–Russian border | News in Depth
A weird scene at Estonia’s eastern border has people on edge – a group of armed men in military gear but no insignia showed up near a narrow road that cuts through Russian territory. Estonia’s border guards say the men lined up across the road, which instantly reminded everyone of the “little green men” Russia used during the 2014 Crimea takeover.

Reporter Randy Potts explained that while Russia often moves troops around the border, this kind of unmarked presence is unusual and clearly meant to send a message. Experts think it’s more of a psychological move than a real military threat – a show meant to stir up fear and confusion. The road itself is a weird one, since it briefly passes through Russian land, and Estonia now plans to reroute it entirely, making travel much longer but safer. That move reflects how the border is becoming more and more like a hardened military line, not the casual crossing point it once was.
