Super Typhoon Ragasa: “Tsunami” type waves slam Taiwanese island like it’s “end of the world”
An eyewitness on Tuesday described the extreme weather from Super Typhoon Ragasa – the world’s most powerful tropical typhoon this year – slamming into Taiwan’s remote Orchid Island “like the end of the world.”

Massive waves crashed onto the shore of the small island, located 90 km (56 miles) off Taiwan’s southeast coast.

Hana Tsai recounted how the storm’s force made it nearly impossible to walk upright. “It felt like it could blow you away. We couldn’t even open our eyes,” she said. As waves surged higher, Tsai feared a tsunami. “If the waves went over our heads, we wouldn’t have had anywhere to run. We could only pray to live another day.”

Meanwhile, at least one person was killed and six remained missing after a fishing boat capsized in the wake of Ragasa, the Philippine Coast Guard said on Tuesday.

Drone video showed flooding throughout a Philippine town north of the capital Manila after Ragasa passed through the day before.
