South Korea to ban cellphones in school classrooms amid social media concerns
South Korean lawmakers have passed a bill to ban the use of cellphones and other digital devices in school classrooms nationwide.
The legislation was passed on Wednesday in Seoul’s National Assembly amid increasing concerns about the impacts of heavy social media use among adolescents.
The ban will take effect in March 2026 and makes South Korea the latest of several countries to impose restrictions on smartphones and social media among youth.
South Korea is one of the most digitally connected nations, with 99 per cent of the population having an online presence and 98 per cent owning a smart device, according to research from the U.S.-based Pew Research Center.
