Madagascar’s president absconds as youth-led protests erupt across the nation
Madagascar’s president has fled the African nation following heated Gen Z protests, the head of the opposition and other officials said on Monday. This is the second time that young protesters have toppled a government during weeks of worldwide unrest.
A military source said Andry Rajoelina flew out of the country on a French military aircraft on Sunday. French radio RFI said he had struck a deal with France’s President Emmanuel Macron.
“The evacuation of Andry Rajoelina was an act of interference by France in Madagascar. Why? Well, because it wasn’t a coup d’état, it was just a call from the people, a call for freedom of expression,” protester Fitahiana Rajaonary said.
Demonstrations had erupted in the former French colony on Sept. 25 due to water and power shortages and quickly escalated into an uprising over broader grievances, including corruption, bad governance and lack of basic services.
