Kenyan police fire shots, deploy tear gas near crowds at viewing of late PM Odinga
Kenyan authorities fired shots near crowds on Wednesday as thousands descended upon Kasarani Stadium for a viewing of the body of former prime minister Raila Odinga.
Warning shots were followed by the deployment of tear gas as a warning to a massive crowd that breached a gate at the Nairobi stadium.
The viewing of the late opposition leader was initially set to take place at the Parliament of Kenya; however, the mass public turnout prompted a swift venue swap.
The rounds sent citizens into a panic — though it is unclear if officers used rubber bullets or live ammunition.
Odinga, who died in India on Wednesday, was a central figure in Kenyan politics for decades. He is recognized for his role in opposition movements, power-sharing agreements, and efforts to calm post-election tensions.
