The group was accused by the RCMP last year of orchestrating a campaign of violence and intimidation against Sikh activists in Canada. The new designation allows authorities to seize property and freeze accounts, and also bars Canadians from financing or aiding the group.

The move comes as Canada and India work to gradually re-establish trust in their diplomatic relations, after nearly two years of strain.
