Carney says age of rules-based trade is “gone,” seeks new geopolitical relationships
Speaking at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, South Korea on Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney promoted Canada as a reliable trade partner to counterparts amid tension in the geopolitical playing field.
Indirectly addressing the turmoil U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs have thrust upon so many nations, Carney noted how the age of rules-based trade that once united APEC leaders is now “gone.”
Trump made a point to be absent from Friday’s APEC meeting, despite gathering with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan a day prior, headed back to the U.S., where he will spend the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
“Our government is charting a new course, with an ambitious mission to double our non-U.S. exports over the course of the next decade. And we’re already making significant progress,” Carney said. “Come build with us,” the Liberal leader added.
