“We make mistakes”: Top BBC execs resign following criticism of Trump speech edit

BBC Chair Samir Shah apologized Monday for what he said was an “error in judgement” after criticism led to the resignation of two of the broadcaster’s top executives over the weekend.

BBC Director-General Tim Davie and News CEO Deborah Turness both announced their resignations on Sunday after facing criticism for how the public broadcaster had edited a speech President Donald Trump made on Jan. 6, 2021, before protesters attacked the U.S. Capitol.

Critics argue that the edit that appeared in a BBC documentary that aired in 2024 was misleading, and that it removed part of the speech where Trump said he wanted supporters to demonstrate peacefully.

Trump’s lawyers have demanded the BBC retract the “Panorama” documentary by Nov. 14 or face a lawsuit of “no less” than $1 billion.
