The Brigitte Bardot Foundation announced the death of their founder, French actress Brigitte Bardot, in a statement on Sunday. Bardot was 91. No cause of death was given.

Known to many in France simply as “B.B.,”Bardot was an icon in cinema and a controversial figure in politics. At 21, she scandalized censors. Her performance in the 1956 film, shot by her first husband, Roger Vadim, marked a decisive break from the demure heroines of the previous era.

In her later years, she was known for animal rights campaigns and far-right political sympathies.

French fans mourned the loss. “The beauty, the sex symbol, sex symbol and her beauty which is known worldwide, she was so beautiful, she is, well right up until the end of her life she was beautiful,” a Parisian fan said.
