A powerful atmospheric river hammered California over the holidays, triggering record rainfall, flooding and evacuations across multiple regions.

Emergency crews say the threat continued Friday – with rain still falling and saturated ground increasing the risk of flooding and debris flows.

Severe thunderstorms and damaging winds caused flash flooding in the northern state, while parts of southern California saw up to eight inches of rain in nearby mountains.

Officials warn additional rain could worsen conditions – especially near burn scar areas as crews remain on high alert statewide.
