Final hostage remains from Oct. 7 attack returned to family

On Monday, Israel retrieved the remains of the last remaining hostage held in Gaza, fulfilling a crucial demand of the initial phase to end the Gaza war. The remains of Ran Gvili, a police officer, had been identified and returned for burial, according to the Israeli military.

Talik Gvili, Ran’s mother said, “I want to say thank you to President Trump, (U.S. envoys Steve) Witkoff and (Jared) Kushner. And Bibi Netanyahu, of course. They promised me to bring my son home and they bring him home.”

Israeli pledges sought the recovery of the remains in exchange for a limited reopening of the Rafah Crossing between Gaza and Egypt, enabling critical supplies and humanitarian aid to flow into the enclave.

Gvili’s remains had been held in Gaza ever since he was killed during the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023.
