Global NewsChina initiates large scale military drills around Taiwan dubbed “Justice Mission 2025”

Multiple forces of the Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) executed joint drills code-named “Justice Mission 2025” around Taiwan on Monday. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said the military drills serve as a stern warning against the so-called separatist forces in Taiwan and external interference.

Conversely, Taiwan Presidential Office spokesperson Karen Kuo said that the PLA “conducting targeted military exercises around our country not only brutally undermines the current state of security and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region, but is also an open challenge to international law and international order.”

In response to the military drills, Taiwan scrambled jets and deployed large ships to face off against the Chinese coast guard near its waters as a means to minimize the drills’ impact on maritime routes.

The exercises come 11 days after the U.S. announced $11.1 billion in arms sales to Taiwan, drawing a protest from China’s defence ministry.
