Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro was taken into federal police custody on Saturday, before a planned supporters’ vigil near his home, ending months of house arrest as he appeals a Supreme Court conviction for plotting a coup.
 
“I stand firm with Bolsonaro and that I do not accept injustice, not only against him but also against the other prisoners,” said Liberal Party congresswoman Bia Kicis.
 
“He and his son staged an escape, and we would have been deprived of what the Brazilian people deserve,” said Ana Denise de Souza, a detractor of Bolsonaro.
 
The Supreme Court ordered detention in a court decision, citing the risk that encamped supporters would hamper police monitoring of Bolsonaro’s house arrest. They also noted evidence of tampering with the ex-president’s ankle monitor the night before.
