BC man fined $5K for flying drone near active wildfire suppression efforts

A Kelowna man will have to pay a $5,000 fine for flying a drone during active wildfire suppression efforts, a provincial court found on Monday afternoon.

Derek Leippi was charged under the B.C. Wildfire Act and found guilty in February, two and a half years after the drone incident.

Leippi told court he was unaware that firefighting aircraft were in the area until he saw a helicopter pick up water.

Global’s Klaudia Von Emmerik reports.
