An estimated tens of thousands of Yemenis, with some reports suggesting the crowd numbered over 50,000, gathered in Sanaa on Thursday to mark the birthday of Prophet Muhammad in a celebration organised by the Houthis. Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi addressed the massive crowd, as similar events were held across other Yemeni cities. The observance, known as Mawlid al-Nabi, is a public holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal. The Prophet is believed to have been born and died on the same date, at age 63.
