A prison riot sparked by gang clashes in southern Ecuador on Monday (22 September) left 14 people dead and another 14 injured. The violence broke out in the port city of Machala, south of Guayaquil, where inmates fought with authorities, killing a guard and taking officers hostage. Several prisoners managed to escape, though 13 have since been recaptured, police said. In a statement, officials added that “officers confronted heavily armed inmates who attempted to flee and seize control of the cellblock.”
