#Firstpost US-China Tariff LIVE: China Warns of Retaliation as US Seeks Tariff Front Against Beijing | N18G
The request by the United States of its allies to impose higher tariffs on China to mediate the Russia-Ukraine conflict is an act of unilateral economic bullying and will seriously damage the world trade system, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press briefing in Beijing on Monday.
Reports from U.S. and European media showed that President Donald Trump is pressuring G7 and NATO members to impose higher tariffs on China for buying Russian oil, believing the move will end the conflict.
“China’s normal economic, trade, and energy cooperation with other countries around the world, including Russia, is legitimate and beyond reproach. The U.S. actions are typically unilateral bullying and economic coercion, seriously undermining international trade rules and threatening the security and stability of the global industrial and supply chains. Facts have proven that coercion and pressure are unpopular and will not solve any problems,” said Lin.
“China’s position on the Ukraine crisis is consistent and clear. Dialogue and negotiations are the only viable way out. China has maintained an objective and impartial position from the first day of the crisis, persisting in promoting peace talks. China firmly opposes relevant parties’ frequent use of China as an excuse, and firmly opposes the abuse of illegal unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction against China. If China’s legitimate rights and interests are undermined, China will resolutely retaliate and firmly safeguard its sovereignty, security, and development interests,” said Lin.
