A recent UN report has exposed systemic corruption among South Sudan’s leaders, accusing them of stealing billions of dollars since the country’s independence in 2011. The report highlights how this rampant looting has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with essential services such as healthcare and education being severely underfunded. Despite being an oil-rich nation, two-thirds of its 12 million people face critical levels of hunger, and the government has outsourced its human rights obligations to international donors. The report details how schemes, such as the “Oil for Roads” programme, have been used to divert public money, with $1.7 billion unaccounted for and 95% of the promised work left undone. This corruption, coupled with an escalating political feud between President Salva Kiir and his rival Riek Machar, threatens to reignite the civil war that ended in 2018.
