Tensions are on the rise in the South China Sea. In a dramatic showdown between Manila and Beijing, the Philippine Coast Guard said that its patrol plane was intercepted by a Chinese fighter jet. The Filipino surveillance flight carried journalists and was allegedly tailed for about 20 minutes. The Philippine Coast Guard said that its plane came within a radius of 500 feet of China’s J-15 fighter jet and, at one point, flew directly overhead. The Philippines accused China of conducting dangerous manoeuvres. According to the Filipino Coast Guard, it is the first time this year that its patrol plane witnessed this type of mid-air encounter by China. The confrontation followed the deployment of two American warships- USS Higgins and USS Cincinnati in a disputed South China Sea shoal. Earlier, China claimed that it drove away an American destroyer in the South China Sea.
