South Africa has launched an investigation into reports that young South African women are being lured to Russia with the promise of well-paid jobs in the construction and hospitality industries. Instead, they are allegedly forced to work in drone production factories that support Russia’s war in Ukraine. The Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Russia’s Tatarstan, a key player in producing military drones, is reportedly one of the main recruiters. These schemes are fuelled by Russia’s severe labour shortages and South Africa’s high unemployment rate. Recruiters are said to be leveraging the BRICS brand to attract job seekers. Similar recruitment drives have been reported in other African nations, including Botswana and Nigeria, raising concerns about vulnerable youth being exposed to dangerous conditions under false pretences.
