India has cleared its largest-ever order for indigenous fighter aircraft, approving the acquisition of 97 Tejas MK1A jets for the Indian Air Force at an estimated cost of $7.1 billion, reports said. The deal, to be executed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, will take the IAF’s total Tejas Mk-1A fleet past 180 aircraft, making it a cornerstone of India’s future airpower. The jets are expected to gradually replace the ageing Soviet-era MiG-21s and provide a much-needed boost to squadron strength, currently below the sanctioned 42 units. The Tejas Mk-1A comes loaded with cutting-edge technology, including Israeli-origin AESA radars, an electronic warfare suite, helmet-mounted sights, and Derby air-to-air missiles. With over 65% indigenous content, the programme will strengthen India’s defence supply chain and boost small and medium enterprises.
